CPAP Cleaning Machine – Which Parts Need Your Attention?
Treating your sleep apnea can reduce your risk of developing long-term health complications while giving you immediate benefits like increased energy, improved cognition, and a more balanced mood and mental state.
CPAP machines have become incredibly popular in recent years, especially as they’ve become more affordable, quieter, and easier to maintain.
While there are many myths and facts about obstructive sleep apnea, one thing is for sure; after you invest in a CPAP device, you need to make daily cleaning a priority. There are significant benefits to be gained from keeping your equipment sterile, and several downsides if you don’t.
A CPAP machine cleaner, like SoClean, is the easiest way to keep all your equipment safe for use. Let’s look at the benefits of cleaning, as well as the specific parts of your machine that require special attention.
The Benefits of a CPAP Cleaner – Why You Need to Keep Your Equipment Fresh
CPAP machines force air into your mouth, throat, and lungs, keeping your breathing regular throughout the night. This is the most effective form of treatment for long term sleep apnea sufferers.
Of course, because your machine is continuously handling air that goes in and back out of your body, it is exposed to countless airborne particles, bacteria, and other pathogens. While the benefits that a CPAP machine offers can be lifechanging, things can quickly turn around completely if you don’t keep your equipment sterile.
By using a CPAP machine cleaner daily, you’ll enjoy the following benefits:
The air that you breathe will be clean and without odor. This can help you to feel more relaxed, enabling you to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep longer.
Unclean equipment like masks and tubes can become contaminated with bacteria and other germs. With the help of a CPAP cleaner, you won’t suffer from an irritated throat or grogginess in the morning and will be at less risk of developing respiratory infections.
If you’ve just gotten over a cold, flu, or other infection, keeping your equipment clean will reduce the chance of you getting sick again.
Which Parts of Your CPAP Machine Do You Need to Keep Clean?
Your CPAP machine is made up of numerous parts that all function together to provide clean air at positive pressure. Some components require daily cleaning, whereas others only need cleaning weekly.
CPAP Mask – Mucus, saliva, and condensation all collect within your CPAP mask, and it’s not enough to simply wipe your mask clean. Thorough daily cleaning is necessary, and you can do it quickly and effectively with a CPAP mask cleaner.
CPAP Mask Cushion – Your mask cushion can become dirty, contaminated, and it may even start to smell if you don’t clean it daily.
Reusable CPAP Machine Filters – Your filter can become contaminated with dust and other particles in the air. Even a lifetime reusable filter should be cleaned at least once a week to keep your machine in optimal condition.
CPAP Hose – The hose or tubing of your CPAP machine can become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. As contaminated air passes through, it can condensate, leaving contaminated residue behind. You must clean your CPAP hose daily.
Humidifier Chamber – You’ll need to empty the humidifier and dry it daily. It should also be thoroughly cleaned once a week to ensure that the air you breathe is clean and free of contaminants.
What Are the Most Effective Cleaning Methods?
When you first start using a CPAP machine, you’ll likely perform cleaning by hand. You can use dissolving disinfectant tablets in hot water to thoroughly remove bacteria and other germs. Unfortunately, not everyone’s cleaning method is the same. You will never be 100% sure that you are removing germs from every corner and crevice of your equipment.
Hand cleaning also takes time, and it quickly becomes inconvenient, especially for parts that require daily cleaning.
A better long-term solution is to invest in a CPAP machine cleaner. Options like the SoClean CPAP cleaner or the Lumin CPAP cleaner are incredibly popular and easy to use. Machine cleaners can use water and sanitization tablets, UV light, or ozone air to perform effective cleaning.
Ozone air cleaners are convenient because you can connect them to your CPAP machine to effectively clean the hose, mask, and humidifier chamber. You won’t need soap, tablets, or water when using an ozone device.

Frequently Asked Questions on CPAP Cleaning Machine
Is a CPAP Cleaning Machine Necessary?
Normally we use soap and water, wipes, vinegar and water to clean our CPAP machine, which need hand working and many time.Use cleaning machine is good choise to intead.UV light cleaner or activated oxygen cleaner, but some studies have shown that the UV light may not reach shadowed parts of the mask and hose, and thus it potentially leaves bacteria and germs intact in those areas where the light may not get to. Also, UV light will not kill bacteria in the hose, the inside of the machine or the water in the reservoir.
The activated oxygen (ozone) has been shown to have multiple benefits over other ways of cleaning the CPAP. A naturally occurring gas, ozone is extremely safe when it is used properly. It has been used to purify water since the 1800s. Today, it’s the method that hospitals, food handlers and the hotel industry use for sanitizing, as it’s been proven to kill virtually all known forms of bacteria in air and water. FREYAT CPAP cleaner is designed to safely use ozone, rather than sending it directly out into the room. A easy and fast CPAP cleaning method, save your time and money.
Are CPAP Cleaners Safe?
The general answer is that it’s safe to use. But the main problem arises when patients who suffer from sleep apnea don’t always follow the instructions. A lot of them often dismiss warning labels, making adherence a hit or miss.
After all, the United States FDA’s Code of Federal Regulations has limits for residual ozone on surfaces. The limit is 0.05 parts per million, which a lot of people at home might not follow. It’s also worth noting that ozone needs more concentrations than that to become an effective germicide.
In sleep labs, the use of ozone is acceptable. The reason is that the employees know the guidelines and understand how to work with chemicals and gases. Patients, on the other hand, might not follow instructions like waiting for at least two hours before using the mask.
Are CPAP Cleaning Machines Worth The Money?
As respiratory Therapist and sleep lab tech, I worry about how people clean their CPAP machines. I rinse mine daily and at least once a week soak all the parts in a water/chlorine bath, rinse thoroughly twice and air dry them. The hoses are hung out in the sun to drain and dry. The wet atmosphere of CPAP equipment is very conducive to bacteria growth. If you are taking care and cleaning your equipment thoroughly, and are happy with the results, buying a cleaning machine is probably not a viable option. If you are NOT extremely careful about cleaning the equipment, purchasing a cleaning machine may well be worth the money. In either case, be sure to clean your CPAP equipment thoroughly and often.
Is It Worth The Money To Buy A Cleaning Machine For My CPAP? If So, Which Is The Best Type?
If you keep it reasonably clean and change the filter which is what I have done with mine for the last nine years. Prior to that I kept for at least 14 years. I had a different one for the first two years. That machine didn’t have a built in humidification. Prior to retirement I cleaned and tested them.
The biggest issue I found in my experience was when smokers used them they literally would literally stink(no offense)when they were returned. Frequently when turned on they smelled so bad that they would be scrapped. There is some spray stuff I got at Home Depot that would get the smell out to a point. Unfortunately it required a lot of time some effort snd there was no guarantee it would work. It required constant use over several days. I sprayed the filter and ran it, AND RAN IT. It was often was more trouble than it was worth.
I would advise checking with the respiratory therapist that set it up for you to find out if a cleaning machine is worth it. If you smoke, you are inhaling the smell and I would advise quoting and getting the spray. That is just my opinion.
How Frequently Should I Use My So Clean Machine To Disinfect My CPAP Machine? I Have Developed A Cough And My Chest Feels Congested.
You are supposed to clean your CPAP machine daily with So Clean or DIY with sterile water and vinegar. You probably got your cold from a friend or coworker not the machine because the machine contains only your germs. However if you are sick and use it it can become contaminated. When I had a cold, I could not stand the CPAP machine. I lost 170 pounds and no longer need it. Hooray!
What Happens If You Don’t Clean Your CPAP Mask?
Dirty masks can cause problems. For otherwise healthy people, these are usually not particularly critical problems, but sebum can build up where the mask touches the skin, mucus might get into the mask system, and the moisture from the heated humidifier, if it doesn’t dry out soon enough after use, might create an environment for bacteria or molds to grow.
That said, the cleaning regimen prescribed by CPAP manufacturers in their literature is often a little exaggerated. In particular, what they do not take into account is that an experienced CPAP user can get quite good at signaling when things are getting dirty. Does it smell funky? You should probably wash it. Unexplained respiratory irritation? Same thing. Getting rashes or acne around the place where the mask touches the skin? You should probably clean it more often (though wiping down with rubbing alcohol towelettes may be good enough). Is the machine reporting high rates of leakage? That too can be caused by dirt buildup.
I find that when using tap water in my heated humidifier, the limescale residue tends to become host to some amount of funky-smelling mold. The alternatives are either to use distilled water, or to clean out the reservoir once a week. A little vinegar readily dissolves the limescale.
Now when you do wash the washable parts of your CPAP equipment (mask, hose, water reservoir), a different question is how best to do it. Personally, I find that even small amounts of perfume present in most soaps are enough to be annoying when you use them to wash CPAP equipment. There are unscented soaps on the market, but they are usually very mild surfactants (typically just old-fashioned vegetable-oil-and-lye stuff) that don’t clean very well without some mechanical scrubbing, which is hard when you are cleaning e.g. the inside of your CPAP hose.
If You Have A CPAP Machine, Do You Use A Machine To Clean It?
I have had a CPAP machine since 2000 and have always used distilled water in the humidifier. Two machines have needed to be replaced over the years. I never clean the machine except to dust it and change the filter. Dish soap and warm water work to clean my nasal pillows and the small tube connected to them about every 4–6 months. I leave them to air dry. My home is in a very dry climate and I don’t have any type of nasal or pulmonary disease so this schedule has been sufficient all these years.
Can You Get Sick From Not Cleaning Your CPAP Machine?
Yes. I’ve used CPAP since 2008 and I’ve had numerous sinus infections over the years from being lackadaisical about cleaning the hoses, resevoir, and mask. It’s one of those things where I’m like “yeah, yeah.. I’ll do it later..”
I’ve found best thing for me to do every morning is take the hose off the machine, take the nasal pillow off the mask and also disconnect the swivel/mask hose from the tubing and let them air out each day.
Once a week I’ll soak the resevoir in the sink with antibacterial soap and soak the hoses, nasal mask as well. I’m talking like a good hour or so and scrub them with a washcloth before I rinse them out and let them air dry.
The biggest culprit creating bacteria in your CPAP machine and hoses/mask is humidity or condensation. That’s why I disconnect everything each morning and let them air out. [2]
What Is The Best CPAP Cleaner Machine?
Normally, the air filter will keep the internal parts of your machine clean. If yours is in a dusty environment, you may need to change the air filter several times a year. I change mine only about twice a year.
The manufacturer of my machine says not to use anything other than distilled water, so to me that means do not use any kind of cleaner or sanitizer.
For the Mask and hose I clean those when I think about it. I use a tablet sanitizer called Steramine. I also use this sanitizer for my beer brewing equipment.
Read the instructions for your CPAP. Also, if you Google the manufacturer, you may get instruction manuals for your machine, if you lost yours.
Are CPAP Cleaning Machines Worth It Now?
I’ve never been convinced that CPAP cleaning machines were worth having in any year. It’s a good idea to wipe down your mask regularly, your headgear when needed, and your tubing from time to time. You should also replace the air filter regularly. These are all things that you can do by hand.
I have never seen the point in a machine that will sterilize the system. It’s like sterilizing my toothbrush. In the first moment that I use it again, it will have all of my bacteria and viruses again, and anything in that mix is something that my immune system already knows how to beat. [3]
Is It Possible To Clean Your CPAP Machine At Home Effectively?
When I initially got my machine, I was never very good about cleaning it regularly. . The instructions said to empty out the water container every morning, and wash everything it every week or so. I did the former, but wasn’t very good about the later.
Now I don’t want this to sound like a commercial, but it probably will. Earlier this year, I saw a TV commercial for a product called SoClean, which is a container you put your whole mask and harness in to. A small tube goes into through the top of the water container of your CPAP unit. So every morning, while I am at work, it cleans the entire CPAP system using ozone. (You have to wait at least an hour afterwards before using your CPAP.)
